# Connect your ChatGPT account

Use your ChatGPT account for the **Advisor and Chronicle inside Stellaris Companion**. No OpenAI API key is needed. Account and workspace eligibility and ChatGPT plan usage limits apply.

:::note[Requires Companion 1.1]
ChatGPT sign-in requires **Companion 1.1**, first available in **1.1.0-beta.1**. [Download a version with ChatGPT](/stellaris-chatgpt#download); the feature page selects the published Stable release once it includes this connection.
:::

## Connect in three steps

1. **Install and open Companion.** Choose the installer for your platform. On macOS, choose Apple silicon or Intel to match your Mac.
2. **Select Continue with ChatGPT.** On the **Connect your advisor** step, choose ChatGPT. Finish signing in with OpenAI in your browser and return to Companion. The app checks and saves the connection automatically.
3. **Connect your save folder.** Finish setup, select your campaign, and wait for a save to load. Open the **Advisor** and ask a question.

Already using Companion? Open **Config → Chat in Companion → ChatGPT**, then continue with the same browser sign-in.

## Ask a first question

> What is causing my energy deficit, and what should I change first?

> How much naval capacity do I have left, and what should I check before my next war?

Companion adds relevant campaign context from your local save. You do not need to upload the raw `.sav` to ChatGPT or write a separate briefing.

## Models and usage

The app chooses **GPT-5.6 Terra** when available and marks it **Recommended**. **Luna** is marked **Lower usage**. Other available choices appear under **More models**.

Change the **ChatGPT model** beneath the Advisor input, in Chronicle, or in Config. Your choice is saved per account and applies to Advisor and Chronicle on the next request. Changing it does not interrupt a reply already in progress.

Advisor answers and Chronicle generation use your ChatGPT plan allowance. Select **Manage usage** to open ChatGPT settings and review plan and app limits. Use the lower-usage option when you want to conserve your allowance; it still consumes usage.

## If sign-in or a response fails

- **Sign-in does not finish:** return to Companion after browser approval. If the connection is still missing, start sign-in again from Config.
- **Account or workspace unavailable:** access depends on eligibility during OpenAI's preview. Try an eligible account or [another provider](/docs/start-here/choose-an-ai-provider).
- **Usage limit reached:** open **Manage usage**, check the reset or app limits, and wait for allowance or choose another provider. Changing models does not guarantee more available usage.
- **No campaign context:** confirm that the correct campaign is selected and at least one save has loaded. See [save detection](/docs/troubleshooting/save-detection).

## What OpenAI receives

Your question or Chronicle instruction and relevant extracted campaign context are sent to OpenAI. Raw saves and the parsed campaign archive remain on your computer. Sign-in does not give Companion access to your existing ChatGPT conversations.

Credentials use the operating system's protected storage. If protected storage is unavailable, the connection lasts only for the current session. See [privacy and data flow](/docs/how-it-works/privacy-and-data-flow).

This guide covers the in-app connection. To use an external AI app instead, see [local MCP connections](/docs/ai-app-connections).
